Nieuw onderzoek van de universiteit van New Hampshire toont dat een autoritaire opvoedingsstijl het risico op delinquent gedrag of het niet aanvaarden van ouderlijk gezag verhoogt in tegenstelling met een meer authoratieve opvoedingsstijl. Een omschrijving van deze opvoedingsstijl:

“Deze ouders leggen zoals autoritaire ouders regels op maar motiveren ze. Ze verwachten dat de kinderen het ouderlijke gezag volgen, maar moedigen hen tegelijkertijd aan een eigen mening te ontwikkelen. Ze gaan in discussie met hun kinderen en geven hen allerhande informatie mee. Ze oefenen controle uit op het gedrag van hun kinderen en de betrokkenheid is groot. Authoratieve ouders bepalen wat er allemaal op tafel komt. De kinderen mogen echter zelf bepalen wat en hoeveel ze ervan eten.” (bron)

Rick Trinkner stelt over het onderzoek dat hij leidde: “When children consider their parents to be legitimate authority figures, they trust the parent and feel they have an obligation to do what their parents tell them to do. This is an important attribute for any authority figure to possess, as the parent does not have to rely on a system of rewards and punishments to control behavior, and the child is more likely to follow the rules when the parent is not physically present.” (lees ook meer hier)

Abstract van het artikel, getiteld ‘Don’t trust anyone over 30: Parental legitimacy as a mediator between parenting style and changes in delinquent behavior over time’

Both law and society scholars and developmental psychologists have focused on the legitimacy of authority figures, although in different domains (police versus parents). The purpose of the current research is to bridge these two fields by examining the relations among parenting style (i.e., authoritarian, authoritative, permissive), the perception of parental legitimacy, and changes in delinquency over time. It is hypothesized that parental legitimacy mediates the relation between parenting style and future delinquent behavior. Middle school and high school students completed questionnaires three times over a period of 18 months. Parenting style and delinquent behavior were measured at time 1, parental legitimacy at time 2, and delinquency again at time 3. The results show that authoritative parenting was positively related to parental legitimacy, while authoritarian parenting was negatively associated with parental legitimacy. Furthermore, parental legitimacy was negatively associated with future delinquency. Structural equation modeling indicated that parental legitimacy mediated the relation between parenting styles and changes in delinquency over the 18-month time period. The implications for parenting style and parental legitimacy affecting delinquent behavior are discussed.
