Ah, Oxford, de stad van Morse en Lewis en vooral de universiteit met de vele colleges waar velen geroepen zijn, maar weinig uitverkoren. Het is nieuws in de UK dat een van die colleges, het Magdalen College, nu zelf een ‘rejection letter’ heeft gekregen van een studente. Elly Nowell stuurde de brief kort nadat ze een interview had afgelegd om aan het prestigieuze college te studeren. De brief is gebaseerd op de standaardbrief die de universiteit zelf verstuurd. Enkele quotes die ik via de BBC vond:

“I have now considered your establishment as a place to read Law (Jurispudence).”

“I very much regret to inform you that I will be withdrawing my application.”

“I realise you may be disappointed by this decision, but you were in competition with many fantastic universities and following your interview I am afraid you do not quite meet the standard of the universities I will be considering.”

Mocht de universiteit haar toch willen, en dus ze willen “reapply”, dan gaat de brief verder, “while you may believe your decision to hold interviews in grand formal settings is inspiring, it allows public school applicants to flourish… and intimidates state school applicants, distorting the academic potential of both”.

Dit laatste zorgt voor de commotie omdat het een zeer effectieve aanklacht blijkt tegen het onderwijssysteem in Groot-Brittannië dat onlangs voor de universiteiten nog een pak duurder werd.

De studente in kwestie over de zaak:

“It was while I was at interview that I finally noticed that subjecting myself to the judgement of an institution which I fundamentally disagreed with was bizarre. I spent my entire time there laughing at how seriously everything was being taken.”

En vervolgt nog:

“Oxbridge is a fairly ridiculous and prominent elitist institution, yet unlike the monarchy or investment bankers it is rarely mocked.

“Even comedians tend to avoid Oxbridge as a subject.”

“Being a successful student should depend on the student, not on whether or not a couple of academics have deemed you to shine in a twenty minute interview.”
